Israel and Hamas at war

  • The latest: The United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council demand for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, even as it kept up pressure on Israel to do more to protect Palestinian civilians during a fierce offensive against Hamas militants across the enclave.
  • Issam Abdallah: An Israeli tank crew killed a Reuters journalist and wounded six reporters in Lebanon on Oct. 13 by firing two shells in quick succession from Israel while the journalists were filming cross-border shelling, a Reuters investigation found. We will run a special edition of our podcast on Sunday, where we will discuss how we investigated the killing.

It's electrifying

  • EV race: The rise of inexpensive Chinese electric vehicles has upped the pressure on legacy automakers who have turned to suppliers, from battery materials makers to chipmakers, to squeeze out costs and develop affordable EVs quicker than previously planned.
  • Tesla's truck: The angular design of Tesla's Cybertruck has safety experts concerned that the electric pickup truck's stiff stainless-steel exoskeleton could hurt pedestrians and cyclists.

2024 US presidential election

  • Dictator day: President Joe Biden kicked off a star-studded fundraising trip in California by mocking Republican frontrunner former President Donald Trump for claiming he would be a dictator just on his first day in office if he became president again.
  • GOP race: Four US presidential contenders - the smallest field yet - debated in Alabama on Wednesday, all trying to survive to battle Trump next year for the Republican nomination. Here are some takeaways from the fourth Republican presidential debate.
