How an unarmed youth was shot by the Nigerian military

This detailed and compelling investigation by Reuters and Bellingcat sheds lights on a 25-second video of a young detainee slain by a military gunman on the day of a battle against the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram. Three experts in international law deem the 2015 shooting a war crime.

The video was passed around among troops, as images of battlefield conquests often are, but had not been released publicly before. It provides gruesome documentation of tactics Nigeria's military has used in its ongoing 14-year war against Islamist insurgents.

The US State Department is calling for an investigation. Nigerian officials previously have denied committing abuses in the conflict.
